This is the #SuccessStory of Shahzad, a #CHDSurvivor at just 10 months. He was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Transposition of the Great Arteries #TGA, a rare and critical heart defect in which the two main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. This leads to a shortage of oxygen-rich blood in the body.
Being diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening disease as an infant left Shahzad’s family devastated, to say the least. After an unimaginable initial shock though, they started the search for his treatment.
Following enquiries throughout the country, they made their way to the city of Lahore where they met Dr. Mohammad Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon. He was the one who informed them about the expensive life-saving procedure Shahzad had to go through, one that involved a CP-Shunt.
Shahzad’s family lives within modest means. His father is a labourer who solely manages to support his wife and 5 children. They were all going through an immensely difficult time ever since the news broke of Shahzad having CHD.
They could not afford the surgery and were in desperate need of financial support. Fortunately for them, Dr. Asim referred them to us. We are among the premier organizations providing world-class healthcare facilities to deserving and needful children suffering from CHD in Pakistan.
When Shahzad’s family came to us, we showed them tremendous care and compassion. We wanted to ensure that all their lives would be like they previously were. Our patient registration process was extremely quick, and thanks to our phenomenal donor base, the required funds were swiftly arranged as well.
With all other hospital and accommodation related formalities also taken care of, Shahzad’s heart surgery was scheduled with our brilliant team of healthcare professionals on board. The entire family was hoping and praying that their state of tremendous anguish would finally end.
After such a complex and intricate procedure which required remarkable skill, we were thrilled to tell Shahzad’s family that he had defeated CHD! Their whole world was about to change with Shahzad getting a second chance at life, one in which he could live like other normal children around him.
Shahzad’s family was delighted with their overall experience, from first contact to discharge. As they were leaving, they expressed eternal gratitude and wished us continued success in all our projects, which are the foundation of turning dreams of CHD affected families into reality.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to join us on our journey to conquering CHD, so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families.
