This is the success story of Abdul, a 16-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. He was diagnosed with a CHD called Tetralogy Of Fallot. The name refers to 4 heart problems which occur simultaneously, decreasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. It can be fatal if left untreated.
Symptoms include bluish skin colour, developmental delays etc. CHDs such as TOF can be caused by a combination of factors, such as genes or things the mother comes in contact with. It may be diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth.
Living the simple farming life in the Muzaffargarh district, a region in Pakistan which has the famous River Chenab, Abdul’s family did not see it coming when his medical condition was identified. Abdul’s parents, like most others, at the time were thinking about how to help their teenage son in the pursuit of his dreams, not how to save his life.
Not wanting any hindrance in their son’s future, they were quick to start the search for his treatment which was long and hard but eventually, they reached us and that made it crystal clear that they would do everything possible to save him.
Being a leading organization in the field of CHD, we have tremendous experience saving lives of children like Abdul. Following initial check-ups, we informed his family that he would need to go through a life-saving procedure called a Total Correction.
Abdul’s father, a farmer who solely supports his entire family which includes his wife and 11 children, needed financial support for this relatively expensive treatment. That’s where our incredible donor base comes in, exceptional individuals and organizations supporting our cause.
Through their generous support, we were able to arrange the required funds. With all hospital-related formalities taken care of as well, Abdul’s heart surgery was scheduled at one of our partner hospitals with our world-class team of healthcare professionals on board.
What followed was a time that no parent or family can imagine the difficulty of, the few hours that Abdul was being operated on. However, once the process was complete, the pure bliss visible on the faces of Abdul’s loved ones was there for everyone to see when they were told that the surgery was a resounding success!
They were over the moon and grateful to us for everything we did to help them get through an ordeal that they never thought they would have to deal with. Abdul’s heart had now been healed and a normal life was on the horizon for him. He could now hope and dream again.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them.
