In adolescence, kids are usually living their best life. Carefree and full of joy. However, for some it is not the same. This is the incredible success story of Hussain, a 14-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Warrior’.
Hussain was diagnosed with a complex CHD known as Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). TGA is a rare, critical heart defect in which the two main arteries leaving the heart are reversed. This leads to a shortage of oxygen-rich blood in the body.
Symptoms include cyanosis (bluish skin colour), shortness of breath, weak pulse and a lack of appetite. It occurs when the baby’s heart is developing. Several factors during pregnancy can increase the risk of a child being born with TGA, like smoking, drinking alcohol, viral illnesses etc.
When it comes to Hussain, he miraculously managed to fight this disease for several years, but eventually needed to get treatment in order to have a chance at living a full, healthy life. He was referred to us by a renowned, world-class Pakistani Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Asim Khan.
Hussain’s planned treatment was a procedure called a CP-Shunt. This is relatively expensive and one that his family could not afford on their own. Hussain’s father works as a driver, and solely supports his entire family, which includes Hussain’s mother, brother and 3 sisters. Luckily for him, he brought his child to the right place.
We have years of experience treating children born with CHD successfully. We also have managed to create a phenomenal donor base, amazing people who believe in our cause and are alongside us on the journey to conquering CHD. Required funds for the surgery were arranged in practically no time because of them.
Once the funds were taken care of, preparations for Hussain’s life-altering heart surgery were initiated. The whole family was facilitated in the best possible way with everything from hospital-related formalities to doctor consultations to accommodation arrangements being made swiftly.
With an amazing team of healthcare professionals on board, all that was needed now was the support and prayers of Hussain’s loved ones. Thankfully, everything fell into place and Hussain’s surgery was a resounding success! His parents were over the moon and his siblings were delighted beyond measure. We at PCHFNA, were also extremely happy with how things turned out.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that success stories of children like Hussain, who can now live a normal life, inspire more people to join us on the journey to conquering CHD, and help us shape a brighter future.
