This is the success story of Abuzar, a 1-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. He was diagnosed with a CHD called Tricuspid Atresia (TA), in which the valve is not formed between the 2 right heart chambers.
Instead a solid sheet of tissue blocks the blood flow between the right heart chambers, limiting the blood flow through the heart. Symptoms include cyanosis (a blue or purple tint to the lips, skin and nails), shortness of breath, fatigue etc.
Abuzar was just an infant when he started suffering from signs and symptoms of his CHD. His family, residing in the Lower Dir district of Pakistan’s northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), first took him to a local doctor for a medical check-up.
After a thorough examination and having suspected a CHD, the doctor recommended an echocardiography (ECHO), a cardiac ultrasound. The results of this test confirmed that Abuzar had TA, which was potentially life-threatening. His parents were devastated.
The mere thought of not having their newborn live a normal life with them was difficult beyond measure for them to fathom. However, they did not give in and started searching for treatment options immediately.
They eventually made their way to Bahria International Hospital Orchard (BIHO) in Lahore, where our flagship project, Pakistan’s first dedicated Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute is being built. That is where they were informed of the relatively expensive cost of the treatment required to heal Abuzar’s heart.
His father, being a labourer in Saudi Arabia, could not afford the full cost and needed financial support. Fortunately for him though, the doctors at BIHO told them about our organization. Since inception in 2016, we have financially supported 600+ life-saving child heart surgeries, with the support of our exceptional donor base.
Being a premier organization in the field of CHD, we were going to do our utmost to save Abuzar’s life. Following a meeting with the family, we scheduled the heart surgery at BIHO with a world-class team of healthcare professionals on board.
The funds were swiftly arranged and all hospital-related formalities were also taken care of. Abuzar’s family was told that he was in the very best of hands and that all they had to do now was to pray that the surgery went well.
Following Abuzar’s surgery, which lasted for a few hours that were tremendously difficult for his family, we were thrilled to inform them that he had shone through adversity and had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Survivor’.
His family felt eternally grateful to us for paving the way to a completely normal life for them. As they left, they wished us continued success in all our projects and looked forward to being able to live a life filled with special moments together.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them. Every life matters, every child matters.
