This is the success story of Talha, a 13-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. He was diagnosed with a CHD called Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC), which is a rare heart defect in which the pulmonary veins that return oxygen rich blood from the lungs are connected to the right side of the heart instead of the left side.
This causes mixing of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood, which leads to body tissue not getting as much oxygen as it is supposed to. Symptoms include breathing problems, poor growth, bluish skin colour (cyanosis) etc.
When Talha was a child, he used to have breathing problems when trying to run around like all the other children around him in his hometown of Bannu, which is in Pakistan’s northernmost province of KPK. As this persisted, his parents took him to a local doctor for a medical check-up.
Following a thorough examination, including an echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, Talha’s parents received the tremendously unfortunate news that their son had a potentially fatal CHD. This was devastating to hear for the entire family.
They were also told that the required procedure needed to save Talha’s life was quite expensive. A labourer who supports a family of 7, his father could not afford it and needed financial support.
After taking Talha to doctor after doctor across various cities for years, they were eventually told to go to Lahore and visit Dr. Mohammad Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon. That is where their fortunes changed.
After listening to the case, Dr. Khan informed the family about us, a premier organization in the field of CHD. Since inception in 2016, we have financially supported 600+ child heart surgeries and are blessed with an exceptional donor base, both organizations and individuals who believe in our cause
Talha’s parents wasted no time whatsoever in contacting us and we were pleased to meet them. Following the initial meeting, it was decided that we would financially support the surgery and we initiated all related formalities immediately.
Once that was all taken care of, Talha’s heart surgery was scheduled at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore with a world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals on board. After such a long journey, his parents were full of hope that everything would turn out well.
Talha was to undergo a complex procedure called a CoA Repair, and as he was in surgery, his loved ones were constantly praying for its success. The hours that followed were extremely stressful for everyone present, however, after its completion we were thrilled to inform them that Talha had defeated CHD! He was now a ‘CHD Survivor’.
With Talha emerging as a warrior, his family was overwhelmed with happiness. They could now smile thinking of a brighter future together. When it was time to leave, Talha’s parents thanked us wholeheartedly and were full of praise for our team. We always appreciate these kind words and use them as a source of motivation to continue saving lives.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them. Every life matters, every child matters.
