This is the success story of Hasnain, a 2-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. He was diagnosed with a CHD called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF), in which 4 heart problems occur simultaneously, decreasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. It can be fatal if left untreated.

Symptoms include bluish skin colour, developmental delays etc. CHDs such as TOF can be caused by a combination of factors, such as genes or things the mother comes in contact with. It may be diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth.

As an infant, Hasnain used to suffer from symptoms of CHD and that led to his parents taking him to a local doctor in their home city of Gujranwala. Despite being the 5th most populus city in the country, the family was told to travel to Lahore for further tests.

They immediately made their way to the renowned Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore and had Hasnain undergo an echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound. The results of this test confirmed Hasnain’s underlying heart condition which meant that his life was in danger.

They were also made aware of the fact that the treatment required to save Hasnain’s life was quite expensive. His father, who works as a shopkeeper at a clothing store and is the sole breadwinner in a family of 6, found it unaffordable.

He started searching for options through various avenues, including online. That is where they learned about our organization and the work that we have done over the years in the field of CHD.

After reading about how we had financially supported 600+ child heart surgeries, paving the way to a normal life for affected families, he was full of hope for Hasnain now. He wasted no time whatsoever in contacting us.

The family was told to come visit us as soon as possible and following our meeting with them, the case was evaluated. Within a few days, we were pleased to inform them that we would be able to arrange Hasnain’s surgery. The required funds would not be a problem thanks to our remarkable donor base.

We are grateful beyond measure to these organizations and individuals who believe in our cause. Hasnain’s father also contributed a portion of the funds. Once this was taken care of, the surgery was scheduled at the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH).

A world-class team of CHD healthcare professionals was on board for the complex procedure called a Total Correction. As Hasnain was going in for surgery, his loved ones were told that everything possible had been done in terms of preparation and all they had to do now was pray for the success of the surgery.

This was beyond a doubt the hardest time of their lives but they still remained calm and composed throughout. A few tremendously difficult hours later, it was our privilege to tell them that Hasnain had defeated CHD! He was a fighter and now, a ‘CHD Survivor’.

His entire family was incredibly proud of him. They felt that Hasnain was born to overcome and destined for greatness. For our team, they only had words of appreciation. As they left, looking forward to living a normal life together, they wished us continued success in all our projects.

1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them. Every life matters, every child matters.
