This is the success story of Kubra, a 2-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. He was diagnosed with a CHD called Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), a rare & critical heart defect in which the 2 main arteries leaving the heart are reversed.
It changes the way blood circulates through the body, leaving a shortage of oxygen in the blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Patients face serious complications, or even death, without treatment.
When Kubra’s parents held her after she was born, they could tell that she had a rapid heartbeat. After getting her checked by their local doctor in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s northernmost KPK province, she was diagnosed with CHD.
With this heartbreaking news, the happiness that the family initially experienced turned to despair in an instant. They were also told that Kubra needed heart surgery as soon as possible and that the cost of the procedure was relatively expensive.
Not being discouraged by the hurdles in front of them, Kubra’s family started looking for treatment options immediately. Her father, who works as a Polio Worker and solely supports his family of 5, needed financial support and in his search eventually made his way to the more urban city of Lahore, the capital of the Punjab province.
It is here that he met Dr. M. Asim Khan, a renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon who also happens to be a PCHF Medical Advisory Board Member. The family was referred to our team and this would be the beginning of their lives turning around.
We are among the very best when it comes to saving lives of deserving children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in Pakistan. This is thanks to our incredible donor base, both organizations and individuals who we are grateful beyond measure to.
Kubra’s father called us and we told him to come get the case evaluated. Following our quick process, we were pleased to inform them that we would be able to financially support the heart surgery and were going to schedule it at Ittefaq Hospital (Trust) in Lahore.
Dr. Asim would carry out the surgery himself alongside a brilliant team of allied healthcare professionals. All hospital and accommodation related formalities were also taken care of. Kubra’s family was told that when she was fighting for her life, all they had to do was pray.
The surgery lasted a few hours after which we were thrilled to inform Kubra’s loved ones that she had defeated CHD! She was now a ‘CHD Warrior’ who, with our help, had a second chance at life.
Her family members were overjoyed and overcome with emotion, especially after a few days when they saw her eating and walking about. At the time of discharge, they thanked our whole team and wished us continued success in all our projects.
1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them. Every life matters, every child matters.
