This is the success story of Maryam, an 8-year-old ‘Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Survivor’. She was diagnosed with a CHD called Tetralogy Of Fallot (TOF), in which 4 heart problems occur simultaneously, decreasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. It can be fatal if left untreated.

Symptoms include bluish skin colour, developmental delays etc. CHDs such as TOF can be caused by a combination of factors, such as genes or things the mother comes in contact with. It may be diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth.

Maryam is from Gujrat, a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan known for its manufacturing capability. As soon as she started suffering from signs and symptoms of CHD, her parents took her to a local doctor for a check-up.

He suspected a possible heart condition and an echocardiography (ECHO), which is a cardiac ultrasound, was recommended. Once the results arrived, the presence of TOF was confirmed. Maryam’s had a potentially life-threatening CHD.

When her parents were told that she needed life-saving heart surgery, they felt as though their whole world had changed for the worst in an instant. Adding to their woes was the fact that the required treatment was relatively expensive and they found it unaffordable.

Maryam’s father is the sole breadwinner in his entire family and was in desperate need of financial support. After asking around and searching for treatment options, he finally came across our organization. This can be considered a life-altering moment for them.

Being an experienced organization in the field of CHD that has financially supported over 600 child heart surgeries, we were happy to be of assistance. After meeting our team, their fortunes changed as they were told that Maryam’s heart procedure, known as a Total Correction, would be fully sponsored by us.

This was possible only because of our remarkable donor base, who we are grateful beyond measure to for being alongside us. Following the swift arrangement of funds, Maryam’s surgery was scheduled at the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH) with a brilliant team of healthcare professionals on board.

As Maryam was about to begin the fight for her life, her loved ones were told that everything had been done in terms of preparation and that they should remain hopeful. To their credit, they maintained their composure throughout the extremely difficult hours that followed.

Once the treatment was complete, it was our privilege to inform Maryam’s family that she had overcome CHD! She was now a ‘CHD Survivor’ who could embrace the transition towards a normal life.

Her whole family felt blessed to be able to enjoy these blissful moments together. At the time of discharge, they were full of praise for our team and wished us continued success for all our projects. We reciprocated the kind words and wished them all a great future.

1 in 100 children are born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect. We hope that these stories inspire even more people to contribute towards our cause so that we can continue shaping a brighter future for affected children and their families. We are genuinely leaving no stone unturned for them. Every life matters, every child matters.
